Recently our sixth grandchild was born. After five granddaughters, we now have a grandson! This recent birth brought out in me some reflections of the birth of our own children. One time when my wife was in labor at the hospital she wanted to walk. Walking made her feel better. I prayed it would also help the baby to be born quicker! The problem with her walking was that she was hooked up to an IV bag. A brilliant nurse got the idea that I could walk with my wife and hold the IV bag up high in the air for gravity’s sake. (No pun intended!) I attribute my bulging muscles to carrying that IV bag for hours as my wife walked the hallways. You know, a man will do all kinds of things they normally would not do when his wife is in labor. I drew the line though when she wanted me to breath along with her – pant, pant, pant, blow!
Why would I hold up the IV bag for so long? Because I loved her. We will handle inconveniences when we love someone. We will get up in the middle of the night to take care of a baby because we love them. We will put up with a teenager when they are being difficult because we love them. We will be patient with others who are being difficult because we love them.
Think about all that God puts up with from us! Yet, He does not reject us because He loves us. Jesus put up with the disciples because He loved them. Jesus went through a mock trial, the beatings, and crucifixion because He loved us. True love is long-suffering. Do you love like that?
I Corinthians 13:7 “Love always protect, always trust, always hopes, always perseveres.”
